Do-It-Yourself Mini Greenhouses

do-it-yourself mini greenhouse projectAttention Costco members! Do you love your rotisserie chicken but feel flummoxed over what to do with those leftover greasy containers? Do you buy your mesclun mix in bulk and puzzle over the remaining pile of plastic? Well here are a couple of projects that will have you feeling a little less guilty about all that plastic packaging. And you won’t have to worry about spending money on a fancy seed starting system.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 clean rotisserie chicken container
  • 2 clean bulk mesclun containers
  • something sharp to poke small holes through plastic
  • 4 empty yogurt containers
  • a sharp knife, razor blade or scissors
  • seed starting cells or small peat pots
  • seed starting mix
  • seeds of your choice

First we’ll start with the rotisserie chicken container. Place moist seed starting mix in the starting cells or peat pots and add your seeds to each cell. Place the peat pots on top of the base of the rotisserie chicken container and pour in enough water so that the peat pots are sitting in about 1/2 inch. Place the top of the container on the base and, voila, instant mini greenhouse. Now go and find a nice sunny location for your new green house.

Now let’s tackle the mesclun containers. Using your knife or scissors cut the top 3/4” off of the four yogurt containers so that you end up with four rings. Place the rings in the bottom of one of the mesclun containers. Pour enough water into the container to cover the rings by a 1/2″ or so. Take the second mesclun container and punch several small holes in the bottom to allow water to wick and/or drain. Fill the second container half full with seed starting mix and place it into the first container so that it is resting in the water and on top of the rings. The starting mix should wick up the water. Now plant the seeds of your choice. Place the top on the container and find a nice sunny location to get those seeds started.
