Not to worry, though. There are more tomatoes in the new greenhouse and I can always go back to Lowes.

Well it’s official, June 2009 was the cloudiest month on record in New England though not the rainiest. The clouds certainly cast a pall on the garden but things haven’t been a total disaster. The chard, peas and other cool weather crops are going gangbusters. I can’t keep up with all the lettuce, spinach, kohlrabi, cauliflower, etc. that the CSA is distributing. The strawberries, on the other hand, are a disaster. Any berry that is near ripe immediately ulcerates and turns moldy. Emma and I picked three pints last Thursday and they literally turned to mush during the 10 minute ride home.

Our own garden is much the same. The early season crops are doing well and the hot weather plants, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, melons are just waiting for their time in the sun. I’m beginning to doubt that we’ll get any melons this year. If we do, they won’t come in until late September. One bright spot, I picked our first raspberry ever yesterday. I guess the variety I bought (which I’ve not been able to find any info on) is an early-mid season variety.
