mystery squashThese were a late season addition to our garden to fill in my lettuce bed in late June. The selection at the local garden center was pretty well picked over by then but we thought we’d try our hand at cucumbers, having never grown them before. Anyway, the flat was labeled “cucumber” but I’m now convinced the tags were switched. deer found my cucumbers and tomatoes

missing leaves on the cucumbers a sure indication of deerWent out to do my daily morning inventory of the garden and found that a deer had made a meal of the trailing cucumber vines and several of the ripening tomatoes. Normally, we don’t have much of a problem with deer, just a few nibbles here and there but no wide scale pillaging.
