FROST! April 28

Woke up to a cold house and found that it had frosted last night. The only crop that worries me are my tomatoes which I gambled on putting in early in the bed next to the house because it is unusually warm. I’ll need to assess the damage over coming days. Not to worry, though. There are more tomatoes in the new greenhouse and I can always go back to Lowes. …continue reading

June 2009, cloudiest month on record

Well it’s official, June 2009 was the cloudiest month on record in New England though not the rainiest. The clouds certainly cast a pall on the garden but things haven’t been a total disaster. The chard, peas and other cool weather crops are going gangbusters. I can’t keep up with all the lettuce, spinach, kohlrabi, cauliflower, etc. that the CSA is distributing. The strawberries, on the other hand, are a disaster. Any berry that is near ripe immediately ulcerates and turns moldy. Emma and I picked three  pints last Thursday and they literally turned to mush during the 10 minute ride home. …continue reading
