Presenting our cucumbers, err, I mean acorn squash. So here is our first harvest ever of acorn squash, another one of several unexpected pleasantries of this garden season. They are much smaller that those found in the local grocery store. Lord only knows what variety they are since I thought I was purchasing cucumbers. Mother nature in her infinite glory and inexorable determination has done the impossible, she has turned my cucumbers into acorn squash! Okay, they were mislabeled when I bought them and though I was unsure exactly what I had last week, now I have a positive ID. We’ve only ever grown summer squashes so this is another first in a season full of them. These were a late season addition to our garden to fill in my lettuce bed in late June. The selection at the local garden center was pretty well picked over by then but we thought we’d try our hand at cucumbers, having never grown them before. Anyway, the flat was labeled “cucumber” but I’m now convinced the tags were switched. The plants and blossoms look like squashes and now that the fruits are set, I’m pretty convinced that we have squashes. The question is, what kind? Can you help me identify them? …continue reading
