Asparagus Varieties

Asparagus - Jersey GiantJersey Knight – This all-male variety yields the highest quality spears of the Jersey hybrids. Developed on the East Coast, Jersey Knight performs well all across the US. Jersey Knight is highly resistant to rust, Fusarium, root rot, crown rot and Cercospora. It is also hardy in cold winter climates where the soil freezes solid. Will overwinter to zone 3.

Jersey Supreme – An exciting release in the Jersey asparagus series. The all-male hybrid emerges approximately 7-10 days earlier than other varieties. This is welcome news for asparagus lovers and market growers. Great tasting and very tender, Jersey Supreme is just as cold tolerant and disease resistant as Jersey Knight.

Jersey Giant – This superior, all male variety from Rutgers University is renowned for its heavy yields, thick spears, and outstanding flavor. Jersey Giant is widely adapted, but is especially well suited for temperate and cool climates. Attractive, dark green spears with purple bracts are large, uniform, and succulent. One of the most frost hardy of the Jersey hybrids, it is resistant to rust, Fusarium wilt, and crown rot. Popular with commercial growers and home gardeners alike due to its high productivity and earliness.

Purple Passion – The very mild, sweet tasting spear of Purple Passion is a delight to eat. Although it turns green when cooked, the sugar content of the spear is 20% higher than green asparagus. Purple Passion is well suited for culture in all parts of the US. Averages 50% male and 50% female plants; overwinters to zone 3.
